Art and Design
At Barnes Farm Primary School, we want all children to experience the joy of being able to express themselves imaginatively through drawing, painting, 3D modelling, collage, printing, textiles and digital media, using a variety of medium
We aim for all art projects in school to give children the opportunity to develop:
- original ideas of their own alongside taking inspiration from the greats
- progressive skills and techniques
- their knowledge of the elements of art (lines, colour, pattern, texture, tone, form and space)
- a growing understanding of how art and design reflects and expresses culture
- an ability to critically reflect on their own work and that of others.
We aspire to give children regular access to art and design learning which is both stand alone as well as cross curricular with other subjects. In Early Years Foundation Stage, expressive arts and design will be accessed through continuous provision as well as adult led opportunities. In KS1 and KS2, we follow the National Curriculum, and children have access to sketch books to try out their ideas and skills. We aim to ensure this is as an important part of the creative process as well as the final product.
We aim:
- To inspire and engage pupils in their artistic education.
- To foster creativity and originality by encouraging imaginative thinking.
- To develop skills and techniques in using a variety of materials and processes.
- To enhance pupils' understanding of art, artists, and art history.
- To promote critical thinking and reflection through the evaluation of one’s own work and the work of others.
- To support pupils in gaining confidence in their artistic abilities and to appreciate the role of art in their cultural heritage.
During their learning journey at Barnes Farm Primary School, we hope that the children will discover the confidence not only to express themselves artistically, to the best of their ability in a variety of ways, but also to develop themselves as positive critics of their own work and that of famous artists/architects. Artwork is evidenced across the school on displays as well as within sketch books. Formative assessment and Pupil Voice is an important aspect to our work where we encourage children to think about continuously in Art – what they are proud of, what they like, what would they do differently next time and what would they like to get better at. Our children enjoy art and like to share, discuss and showcase their work.
